On Oct. 27, 1928, a flotilla of ships is led down the Harlem River by the City flagship ‘Macon’ in celebration of the remodeling of the High Bridge. The bridge piers that had hampered navigation on the river were replaced with a steel arch making it possible for larger vessels to traverse the Harlem River without impediments. In addition to the day’s marine parade, ceremonies were held on the top of the bridge, and a luncheon was later held at the Concourse Plaza Hotel.
