Established by the New York City Education Department under authority of an act of Congress as the New York Nautical School, and as such, until 19808, the U.S.S. St. Mary’s was utilized as a schoolship to train officers for the American Merchant Marine. The U.S.S. Newport followed the St. Mary’s as the schoolship. In 1913, control of the school was assumed by the New York State Education Department and its name was changed to the New York State Merchant Marine Academy in 1929. The U.S.S. Empire State succeeded the Newport in 1932 and the Academy moved to this site in 1938. In 1941 the name was changed to New York State Maritime Academy. Circa 1960s.
